WOMEN WHO INSPIRE: Katja Grubiša
By Ziva Javersek
Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to Katja Grubiša, a woman who has inspired me with her bold decision to completely transform her lifestyle. Katja transitioned from a 9-to-5 corporate job in the bustling capital city to embracing the freedom of freelance work and moving to a tranquil island.
By trading the hectic city life for the serene and calming atmosphere of a small seaside town on Krk Island, Katja perfectly embodies our philosophy of embracing slow, meaningful days.
Let’s hear what she has to share about her journey. Enjoy the interview.
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Warm, mindful, creative…
You transitioned from a busy city life to a peaceful island lifestyle. How did that change feel for you? Do you miss anything?
Up until very recently, I was completely convinced that city life was the only life for me—I couldn’t imagine living anywhere that wasn’t just five minutes away from a great specialty coffee shop. But once our summer house renovation was finished, I fell in love with the place in a way I never expected. Moving in happened so naturally, and before I knew it, my beloved Ljubljana apartment had slipped to second place.
You had the courage to leave a corporate job and pursue freelance work. What was the main motivation behind that decision, and how do you feel about it now?
Fifteen months ago, I made the leap from corporate life to freelancing, and honestly, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. At the time, we were in the middle of renovating our house, and I craved more flexibility and freedom. But more than that, I wanted to experience this lifestyle long-term—working with inspiring brands, sharing my marketing expertise, and surrounding myself with like-minded entrepreneurs. I feel incredibly grateful that my clients today are exactly that, and I haven’t looked back once.
What is your passion, and what inspires you?
Since I was little, I’ve been obsessed with renovation TV shows, interior design magazines, and home-making videos—so this island cottage project has truly been a dream come true. I also love baking, reading, and long walks by the sea. There may not be many (or any!) specialty coffee shops around here, but honestly, the views make up for it.
What does sustainability mean to you?
I worked for four years at a startup that was very sustainability-focused, so a lot of those habits stuck with me—like always bringing a reusable water bottle and being mindful about recycling. As I get older, I also find myself investing in fewer but higher-quality fashion pieces, especially timeless accessories—my VIVA’S bag goes absolutely everywhere with me.
What brings you happiness?
Walking by the sea with my partner, enjoying time alone, or hosting friends and family at our house—cooking, sharing drinks, and chatting for hours. It might sound boring, but simple moments like that bring me the most joy.
What does your morning routine look like?
I start my day with hot lemon water, do my skincare routine, and make breakfast and coffee for the two of us. Then, I dive into work for a couple of hours to tackle the most pressing tasks before taking a break for a workout or a midday walk.
Do you have any special rituals?
I take a little walk around our tiny village every day at lunchtime while listening to a podcast—it’s become such a nice midday reset. I also love my afternoon matcha ritual. But honestly, I’m still discovering new routines, as this lifestyle is still very new to us!
What are the essentials you always carry in your bag?
Always: a water bottle, wallet, and phone. Most days, my laptop too. If I’m lucky, a good book to read by the sea (so idyllic, I know—haha). And, of course, a lip gloss and hand cream—I’m such a girly girl.
